Wi-Fi Provider Gogo Apologizes After Commenting on Justine Sacco Saga

UPDATE: Inflight Wi-Fi provider Gogo injected itself into the fracas about IAC communications head Justine Sacco's unfortunate tweet on Friday, and then later apologized for doing so.

@JustineSacco,apologize for response to your tweet.Right or wrong,It’s not our policy to engage on these subjects.We clearly need a review.— Gogo (@Gogo) December 21, 2013

Sacco became the topic of Internet discussion Friday evening after she tweeted, "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!" Sacco, who was on a plane to Africa as the response to the tweet played out, has not responded though her account has been deleted. Gogo, which provides wireless Internet on flights, used the occasion to highlight its service:

Next time you plan to tweet something stupid before you take off, make sure you are getting on a @Gogo flight! CC: @JustineSacco— Gogo (@Gogo) December 21, 2013

At this writing, Gogo's tweet has been retweeted close to 1,000 times and favorited more than 600 times. A few followers of the brand questioned the tweet, however, asking among other things, if Wi-Fi was actually available on Sacco's flight and if the brand was taking advantage of the incident to indulge in real-time marketing.

@DouglasCrets You made our point. With inflight connectivity the full story would have already been out there.— Gogo (@Gogo) December 21, 2013

Not everyone felt that way:

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));
