How do you top the most-shared Super Bowl ad of all time?

Volkswagen's approach seems to be self-parody, viral video-mongering and puppies -- lots of puppies. At least that's what appears in the automaker's Super Bowl teaser ad. VW dropped the video, above, which shows a German engineer using an algorithm to come up with "the most successful Volkswagen ad" and the "ultimate commercial for your big American football festival."

It features a writhing Carmen Electra, balloons, puppies, a giant hamburger and an Abraham Lincoln doppelganger, among other icons designed to appeal to American tastes. However, things quickly go awry when Electra sets off a car alarm, and a ball machine malfunctions, shooting one into an old man's groin.

VW released a teaser ad for last year's Super Bowl spot, as well. It featured reggae great Jimmy Cliff and YouTube stars including eHarmony's crazy cat lady and political candidate Phil Davison.

The Super Bowl ad that eventually ran featured a white guy who spoke in a Jamaican accent, making it loosely related to the teaser. VW's latest teaser may be a similar case of intentional misdirection.
