Brooks Wheelan will not be returning to Saturday Night Live next year.
The comedian broke the news via Twitter on Monday. A source confirmed the news to Mashable.
Had a blast and loved every second of it. I'm totally honored to be able to make this next joke... FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!— Brooks Wheelan (@brookswheelan) July 14, 2014

Wheelan's exit marks SNL's first official casting decision, as the live comedy show heads into its 40th year.
Wheelan's first -- and ultimately only -- year on the show was a rocky one, with the Upright Citizen's Brigade alum failing to break out, despite recurring appearances on Weekend Update and some well-received impressions, including Kid Rock and Jay Leno.
The fates of fellow freshman cast members Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, Mike O'Brien, Noel Wells, and Sasheer Zamata are not yet known. Meanwhile, five-year veteran Nasim Pedrad has said she does not expect to return to SNL, as her work on Fox comedy Mulaney would prevent her from doing both.
