Lyrics videos will get some time to shine at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 24.
MTV has added a new category -- Best Lyric Video -- and Mashable has learned which five videos are the category's inaugural nominees (see them below).

"Lyrics are as important to music fans as ever, and the evolution of lyric videos is evidence of that," Amy Doyle, MTV's executive vice president of music and talent programming strategy, told Mashable. "As we started discussing new categories for this year's show we immediately gravitated to celebrating the emerging art form of the lyric video."
Lyric videos, which artists release before they debut their official music videos, emphasize the words, though the visuals have become more and more elaborate over time, with some lyric videos resembling full-on music videos and attracting tens of millions of views.
People can vote for their favorite lyric video from this small pool of nominations via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Vine using hashtags associated with each video.

In other categories, Beyoncé leads the pack with eight nominations for three videos that were released on the same day in December as part of her self-titled surprise album. Her videos for "Pretty" Hurts," "Partition" and "Drunk in Love" (featuring Jay Z) all snagged nominations. Iggy Azalea and Eminem each notched seven nominations -- some for Iggy's Clueless-themed "Fancy" and Eminem's "The Monster" collaboration with Rihanna.
