LOS ANGELES -- Who runs the world? Girls.

The ladies outshone the gents at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, providing the night's most-discussed moments and snatching up the majority of the major awards.

On Facebook, the show had more than 13 million people generating 30 million interactions (likes, comments and shares), compared to 9 million people and 26.5 million interactions last year. Here are the top four viral moments, based on data Facebook gave Mashable:

1. Beyoncé's medley

"MTV, welcome to my world," Beyoncé proclaimed during a medley of songs from her self-titled visual album that earned her eight nominations and three wins.

Topping off the performance, Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy strolled on stage to present Beyoncé with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award -- a.k.a. MTV's lifetime achievement honor.

2. Nicki Minaj, Jessie J and Ariana Grande opener

Nicki Minaj's booty-bouncing "Anaconda" performance (right after Ariana Grande's space-inspired "Break Free" set) went off without a hitch, despite a scare at rehearsals earlier in the week when a 6-foot snake planted its teeth into a backup dancer's left arm.

"Anaconda" transitioned into "Bang Bang" with Grande and Jessie J, during which Minaj suffered a wardrobe malfunction. Her dress burst open, and she had to grasp it shut until the end.

3. Sam Smith performs 'Stay With Me'

Not needing an elaborate setup or backup dancers to impress, crooner Sam Smith melted hearts with his massive hit "Stay With Me" as the in-house audience slowly waved their arms from side to side. The spotlight was on his voice, and that's all we needed.

4. Miley Cyrus wins Video of the Year

Miley Cyrus won the night's biggest award -- Video of the Year -- and opted to forgo giving an acceptance speech. Instead, she let a formerly homeless teen named Jesse give an emotional speech to help raise awareness and funds for homeless youth.
