Reddit's General Manager Steps Down at Important Juncture

Reddit's general manager has stepped down, leaving the company without one of its most veteran employees during an important period for the website.

Erik Martin, who had been with Reddit for six years, announced on Twitter that he would be leaving the company.

Hard decision, but after 6 outstanding yrs I’m leaving reddit. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way & made it an amazing ride!— erik martin (@hueypriest) October 13, 2014

Martin had helped oversee tremendous growth at the site, from its start as a little sibling to popular link website Digg through its emergence as a major force on the Internet. In September, the site drew 19.2 million unique visitors and served more than 140 million pageviews.

Reddit is currently at something of a turning point. The site's profile has never been higher -- for reasons both good and bad. Reddit raised $50 million recently while also taking widespread criticism for its part in the dissemination of leaked celebrity pictures.

Martin has not yet responded to a request for comment, although he has been responding to people on Twitter with gifs.
