Apple announced on Thursday that it will launch its WatchKit platform for developers looking to build apps for the Apple Watch starting next month.

WatchKit will let developers create notifications, home screen apps and custom interactive watch faces. It's already teamed up with a few companies to build apps for the Apple Watch, such as Facebook, BMW, MLB at Bat, Pinterest and American Airlines, but the toolkit will open up the platform to others.

The WatchKit launch month was announced during a presentation held at the company's headquarters.

Although we still don't know when the Apple Watch will launch, Cook has said it will debut in early 2015. The smartwatch -- which will start at $349 -- will be available in two sizes (38 mm and 42 mm) and in a variety of different styles. You can send and receive text messages, take calls and monitor your health and fitness throughout the day, all from your wrist.
