Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson would leave his post and management of his beleaguered department would be overseen by the St. Louis County police chief, under a reported plan.

The proposal, first reported by CNN Tuesday, has been part of ongoing discussions amongst officials from local, state and federal agencies.

But Jackson said he has not been asked to step aside.

"Nobody in my chain of command has asked me to resign, nor have I been terminated," he told CNN by phone.

A similar statement was posted on his police department's Twitter feed.

And Ferguson's mayor denied the ouster plan at a city council meeting Tuesday.

The resignation plan comes as protesters remain active in Ferguson, a city riled by months of demonstrations since the killing of an unarmed black teen by a white Ferguson police officer in August. The death of 18-year-old Michael Brown sparked heavy protests that were met early on by tanks and tear gas, inciting a civil rights discussion regarding police violence and diversity among Ferguson officers.

Brown's parents and others have called on Jackson to be fired in the past, but to no avail. Jackson's apology to Brown's parents--which came six weeks after Brown died--was too little, too late, protesters said at the time. The officer who shot Brown, Darren Wilson, hasn't been charged and Grand Jury proceedings regarding an indictment are ongoing.
