LONDON -- Most celebrities would choose Twitter or perhaps a statement through a publicist to announce their engagement to the world, but Benedict Cumberbatch went for a more traditional option.
The Sherlock star placed an advert in the classified section of the London Times to tell the world of his plans to marry his girlfriend Sophie Hunter.
The ad in the paper noted the "forthcoming marriage" of a Mr B.T. Cumberbatch to Miss S.I. Hunter. It read: "The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katherine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."

The announcement is a typically understated gesture from a couple who have mostly shunned the spotlight. The relationship was confirmed earlier this year when they were pictured at the French Open.
Hunter is an actress and director and has appeared onscreen alongside Cumberbatch in 2009's Burlesque Fairytales.
Cumberbatch recently tried to walk like Beyoncé on The Graham Norton Show.
