Taylor Swift's sales for her fifth studio album 1989 are out of the woods and out of this world, particularly during the modern age of YouTube, digital downloads and streaming.
Swift sold 1.287 million copies from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2, making 1989 the first and only album released in 2014 to earn platinum status, the million-copies-sold milestone.
1989 tops this week's Billboard 200, and it becomes only the 19th album in Nielsen SoundScan history, dating back to 1991, to sell one million copies within a week. Swift now owns three of those 19 albums with 1989, 2012's Red and 2010's Speak Now.
Swift reacted to her sales total on Instagram, posting a video lip syncing to Kendrick Lamar with the caption: "Industry experts predicted 1989 would sell 650k first week. You went and bought 1.287 million albums."

Billboard released the sales figures and noted that 1989 has had the biggest sales week since 2002's The Eminem Show -- featuring Eminem's "Without Me," "Cleanin' Out My Closet" and "Superman" -- which notched 1.322 million in its first full week.
Swift, as she pointed out on Instagram on Wednesday, was 12 in 2002.

Though 1989 was available in digital stores like iTunes, Google Play and Amazon, Swift and her label Big Machine Records notably left the album off of streaming platforms like Spotify, Beats Music and Rdio. The strategy helped spur sales online and brick-and-mortar retailers, especially at Target, where Swift offered three exclusive songs, voice memos and Polaroid photos. Microsoft also offered 1989 for $0.99, but SoundScan didn't account those sales.
Swift's Red in 2012 also didn't appear on Spotify and other platforms until months after it was released in digital stores and physical retailers. Red sold 1.21 million in its first week.
