While the value of Bitcoin has gone up and down, another trend has stayed consistent: The global digital currency is increasingly popular with retailers.

Currently, more than 21,000 merchants offer Bitcoin payment options, with some big-name retailers on the list, including Amazon, Overstock, CVS and Expedia. This year, Overstock even decided to pay staff bonuses in Bitcoin.

One significant indicator of the cryptocurrency's influence over retailers will be the number and value of Bitcoin transactions during this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. In 2013, Bitcoin transactions skyrocketed to 6,296 on Black Friday, and $487 million was exchanged on Cyber Monday.
