Although the debate on the correct pronunciation of the term "GIF" continues, 2014 was still a great year for the file format.

A lot of great moments took place, which will allow GIFs to flourish well into 2015 and beyond. Twitter is finally supporting them on its platform and the GIF also saw some technological advancements with sites like Imgur and Gfycat paving the way for a higher quality GIF of the future.

People still depend on the format to convey emotions, tell stories and deliver messages in a way that's easy to share and is short enough for our decreasing attention spans.

It's safe to say that GIFs are here to stay. Now if we could only agree on how to say it.
