Bill Cosby has resigned from Temple University's Board of Trustees amid sexual assault allegations after serving for 32 years on the board.

According to a statement from Temple University, the board of trustees accepted his resignation and thanked Cosby for "service to the university" on Monday. One of Cosby's first accusers was a former basketball team staff member from the university, named Andrea Constand, who settled with the comedian out of court in a civil suit.

"I have always been proud of my association with Temple University," Cosby said in the statement released by the university. "I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees."

At least 15 women have come forward to publicly accuse the comedian and actor of sexual misconduct. No criminal charges have been filed against Cosby.

Temple University has come under fire in recent weeks as allegations against Cosby continued to mount. Hundreds signed an online petition urging the university to drop Cosby from its board.

"It's time for Temple to recognize that continuing its relationship with Bill Cosby is damaging to its own reputation, as well as its students, employees and alumni," read the petition. "It's time for Temple University to sever its ties with this man. Temple should not be the last organization to end its relationship with Bill Cosby -- it should have happened in 2005 when the allegations against him first began to surface."

Cosby is a Temple University graduate and Philadelphia native.
