The demand for thinner, lighter gadgets continues unabated, and to meet it, manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of design. In the case of the latest Dell XPS 13, the boundaries are being pushed right to the edge: The PC has one of the thinnest screen bezels we've seen on a laptop computer.

The distance from the edge of the screen to the edge of the device is a mere 5.2 millimeters, or 0.2 inches. Dell claims its 2015 XPS 13 is the smallest 13-inch laptop in the world, measuring 12 x 7.9 x 0.6 inches and weighing 2.6 pounds (2.8 with a touchscreen).

Dell calls the 13.3-inch screen an "infinity" display, and although that implies you'll be swept away on a 2001-esque cosmic journey of light and wonder every time you look at it, that's probably just marketingspeak for the impressive 3,200 x 1,800 resolution -- for a total of 5.7 million pixels. A 1,920 x 1,080 screen is an option, too. It's protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

The laptop packs Intel's latest Core processor, a fifth-generation "Broadwell" chip, and buyers can configure it from a Core i3 to an i7. RAM can be 4GB or 8GB, and storage options are 128, 256 or 512GB -- all SSDs (no hard-disk option).

Dell rates the battery at an eyebrow-raising 15 hours, and the optional Power Companion booster can crank that up to 23 hours.

Dell is also launching a new XPS 15 laptop, whose claim to fame is a 15.6-inch screen with 4K Ultra HD resolution (3,840 x 2,160). If you've ever looked at one of today's ultra-sharp displays and thought, "Damn, I need more pixels," this is your baby.

The XPS 13 is available now, starting at $799.99, and the XPS 15 is coming "soon" and starts at $2,349 if you want it with the 4K display.
