Thousands gathered in central Paris in a show of peaceful defiance Wednesday night, after a shocking attack at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left 12 people dead. At the Place de la République, Parisians held a moment of silence and thrust pens into the air as a sign of solidarity.

Demonstrations spread to other cities across France and other major European cities.

During the Wednesday attack, masked gunmen shouted "Allahu akbar!" as they stormed Charlie Hebdo's Paris office while staffers were in an editorial meeting. The gunmen were still on the loose as the demonstrators took to the streets.
