A police officer has died and a second person has been injured in a separate shooting in Paris Thursday morning, according to French media reports.

An elite heavily armed French police unit had arrived at the scene in Montrouge, southern Paris, shortly before 11 a.m. local time, joining other police officers, firefighters and rescue workers. The public and media were moved away from the area.

It was not immediately clear if there is a connection to Wednesday's attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices, which left 12 people, including two police officers, dead.

A massive man hunt is underway for the two suspects from that attack. French media is reporting that the two suspects two suspects Cherif Kouachi, 34, and his brother, Said Kouachi, 32, were located in Aisne, near Villers-Cotteret on the RN2.

There were reports that a service station has been sealed off as part of the investigation, but French authorities have not confirmed this.

Montrouge

One man has been arrested following the shooting of the policewoman on Thursday, according to French media reports, but a second suspect is believed to be on the run.

"There was an officer in front of a white car and a man running away who shot," Ahmed Sassi, who saw the shooting from his home nearby, told The Associated Press.

He said the shooter wore dark clothes but no mask. "It didn't look like a big gun because he held it with one hand," Sassi said.

France's top security officials were holding a meeting at the time of the attack. Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve left the meeting and went to the scene, according to AFP.

Heightened security

France has raised its terror alert system and bolstered security with more than 800 extra soldiers to guard media offices, places of worship, transport and other sensitive areas.

The country's new Vigipirate plan is at "scarlet" or red alert. La Figaro reported that all available forces were being mobilised to respond.
