Augmedix has announced a $16 million Series A funding round as the company looks to build out its Google Glass-powered medical tools for doctors.
[seealso slug=http://sale-online.click/2014/11/17/breaking-up-with-google-glass/%5D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe startup, which was founded in 2012, is building programs for Google Glass that organize and present patient records, meant to streamline doctors' work and quickly provide them with key information. The company already works with five national health systems and has grown to more than 100 employees.
Emergence Capital and DCM Ventures, Augmedix's seed investors, led the round.
"This new round of funding demonstrates that Google Glass is thriving in the enterprise space, particularly in healthcare," said Ian Shakil, CEO of Augmedix, in a press release. "In terms of economic impact, we've repeatedly shown that our service effectively turns three doctors into four."
Once the darling of the wearable computing movement, Google Glass has seen a decline in popularity and use.
While mainstream consumer adoption never came to fruition, Glass has proven useful for professionals in a variety of fields. Workers on oil rigs have used the product. Police in Dubai are set to use them to fight crime. NASA has tested Glass underwater to see how it would perform in space.
Augmedix is not the only startup looking to apply Glass in the medical field. Remedy is also looking to turn Glass into a time-saving, Doctor-helping apparatus. There are also educational applications. In 2013, a doctor streamed a knee ligament surgery via Google Glass, providing a first-person point of view on how to perform the procedure.
