As the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, one thing became glaringly obvious: Nominees were overwhelmingly white.
In response to the lack of diversity in the acting and directing categories, along with the snubbing of Selma, frustrated film fans created the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
Featuring jokes about the whiteness of the awards -- Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male, according to one report -- #OscarsSoWhite shows the disconnect between the Academy and the movie-watching public.
Apparently to @TheAcademy, in 2015, only the stories (some made up) of white people are relevant. #OscarsSoWhite pic.twitter.com/ZQFfV1hQSt— Nerdy Wonka (@NerdyWonka) January 15, 2015
