Microsoft showed off an all new suite of Office apps optimized for touch devices on Windows 10.

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore showed off preview versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps for Windows 10 on a Windows Phone.

All of the new Office apps will be free and automatically included in the Windows 10 build on phones.

The latest versions of the apps support the Office Ribbon, which allows users to quickly access the formatting menu at any time to help provide what Belfiore described as a "nearly no compromise experience" when using them on Windows Phone handsets.

The Office apps will also support wireless printing and mirrorcast so you can beam presentations to a display from your phone or tablet.

Belfiore also previewed the upcoming Outlook email and Calendar apps for Windows 10, which will be universal apps. The new Outlook will include support for gesture-based controls; left and right swipes allow you to delete or flag messages in you inbox, similar to the way gestures work in Mailbox and other email apps.

The new Office apps look different from the existing versions for Windows Phone handsets and small tablets; the new user experience is much closer to the current desktop apps.

Microsoft is offering the apps to users for free, which is not surprising. Since first unveiling its Office apps for iPad last year, the company has increasingly focused on making the Office suite free for mobile users.
