At least three people, including a child, were killed and 93 others were rescued when a wooden boat carrying dozens of migrants who had departed from Turkey ran aground off the Greek island of Rhodes. Dramatic photos show migrants clinging to pieces of wreckage and rescuers helping them ashore.

The incident is the latest in a series of shipwrecks that have claimed the lives of an estimated 1,600 migrants attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing this year in hopes of reaching Europe. The European Union has called an emergency meeting to discuss implementing a comprehensive search and rescue operation to respond to the tens of thousands who are expected to make the journey in the coming months, fleeing instability and conflict in the Middle East and Africa.
