Rumor has it Ava DuVernay could be headed to Marvel.
The Selma director is reportedly being courted by Marvel to direct either Captain Marvel or Black Panther, according to The Wrap. The latter film, starring Chadwick Boseman, seems more likely, according to insiders, and is slated for a July 2018 release.

DuVernay would be the first woman and African-American director to helm a Marvel film. Black Panther is the story of T'Challa, an African prince with superhuman strength and senses. The film is Marvel's first major movie with a nonwhite hero, and the studio would be remiss to if it didn't tap a diverse director for this opportunity.
It's been a wild year for DuVernay, who stepped into the spotlight in a major way after directing the MLK biopic Selma. Though the film was nominated this year for best picture and best song (which it won) at the Oscars, many were outraged the director herself didn't receive a best director nomination.
Since then, DuVernay has been racking up work, recently directing the pilot for CBS series For Justice. She's also currently producing, writing and directing upcoming OWN series Queen Sugar, and has a Hurricane Katrina film in the works, starring Selma lead David Oyelowo.
Prior to all this, DuVernay was a publicist, breaking into the film world with low-budget indies that made waves at Sundance. It's safe to say joining the Marvel universe will be a super-sized change of pace.
