A newly discovered galaxy was named after Cristiano Ronaldo, 'cause why not

Famed soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo is an inspiration for many.

You can add star-gazing astronomers to that list.

A team of scientists at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) recently discovered a distant galaxy, dubbed CR7. The real name of the galaxy is actually COSMOS Redshift 7, but a a footnote in a news release discussing the galaxy revealed Ronaldo was the true inspiration behind CR7.

The research team studying CR7 was led by David Sobral, who works at the University of Lisbon in Portugal and the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences.

Ronaldo plays for the Portugal National Team as well as the Spanish team, Real Madrid, where he wears No. 7. Ronaldo has branded himself, his underwear line and his footwear line as CR7.

According to the astronomers, the galaxy is three times brighter in terms of ultraviolet light emission that the previous titleholder, Himiko, which was thought to be one of a kind.
