LOS ANGELES -- These dinosaurs have legs.

Jurassic World topped the domestic box office for a third straight weekend with $54.2 million, squeaking past Inside Out, which only dropped 42% in its second frame for $52 million -- a terrific hold for the Disney/Pixar hit.

It was the second three-peat of 2015 after Universal's other juggernaut franchise Furious 7, which cruised along at No. 1 for four consecutive weeks in April.

Universal's magic touch didn't do much for Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2, which opened to a lower-than-expected $32.9 million. After the original Ted took $54 million in its opening weekend on its way to a stunning $549 million global haul, box office watchers had expected a three-way race for bragging rights in North America. But the foul-mouthed stuffed bear couldn't keep up.

Jurassic World -- the quickest film to make $1 billion globally in history -- sailed past Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend to become the biggest hit of the year in North America, where it's also become the fastest film to cross $500 million. It also overcame Star Wars: The Phantom Menace for fifth place all-time domestically, and now has The Dark Knight in its sights.

Jurassic World's breathtaking run at the box office has overshadowed an impressive two-week debut for Inside Out, now up to $185 million domestically and $266.4 million worldwide. And it still has plenty of running room, with major territories Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K., Korea and Japan yet to open.

The 42% drop for Inside Out shows strong word of mouth and repeat business, which bodes well for next week, when things get really crowded at the box office with the arrival of Terminator: Genisys and Magic Mike XXL.
