LOS ANGELES -- All is not as it appears with Maisie's Williams' character on Doctor Who.

While executive producer Steven Moffat wouldn't say much about the Game of Thrones favorite's visit to the show, he did take time on Friday to bust a fan theory that emerged with the first trailer for the upcoming season: She's not someone from the Doctor's past.

"I think it's worth saying, as it keeps coming up as an issue: she's not playing a returning character," said Moffat, speaking at a panel for the show during the Television Critics Association press tour. "She's a brand new character."

But new doesn't mean unimportant. Moffat said that it was important to make Williams' part "a significant role" that will "develop in unexpected ways."

Ok, Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi are being really funny and adorable pretending to see us via satellite when they can’t #DoctorWho #TCA15— Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) July 31, 2015

"We're not just throwing her away," he said. "We're not just getting the star value and doing nothing with it. It's a great part and she's terrific in it."

Stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman also appeared during the panel via satellite.

Doctor Who Season 9 begins September 19.
