Your next smartphone could recharge from 0 to 80% in 35 minutes

Waiting for your phone to charge up is as exciting as watching painted walls dry. It's a slow, but necessary process.

While there's nothing that can be done about the boring part, Qualcomm, the Intel of smartphone processors, is speeding up charging times even more with Quick Charge 3.0 in its next-gen chips.

Phones with new Snapdragon 820, 620, 618, 617 and 430 mobile system-on-chip (SoC) processor will support the new fast charging technology.

Qualcomm says Quick Charge 3.0 can "charge twice as fast as Quick Charge 1.0," which itself can charge 40% faster than "conventional charging." Phones with Quick Charge 3.0 will be able to be charged from 0 to 80% in 35 minutes.

Faster charging times are achieved by using intelligent algorithms and a range of wider charging voltages.

Furthermore, Quick Charge 3.0 is 38% more efficient than Quick Charge 2.0, a technology found in many flagship Android smartphones.

QuickCharge 3.0 will be backwards compatible with all types of USB, including full-sized USB, micro USB, the new USB Type-C, and even some proprietary charging ports.

What's most interesting is Quick Charge 3.0 doesn't support fast wireless charging, a feature Samsung's Galaxy S6/S6 Edge and Galaxy Note 5/S6 Edge+ have.
