As the United States prepares for Pope Francis' historical visit, Twitter has prepared its own welcome for @Pontifex.

Twitter introduced a set of special emoji on Tuesday for Pope Francis' historic visit to the U.S. The special characters include an image of Pope Francis in front of an American flag, the Capitol building, the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. Similar to special emoji used for other major events like the World Cup, the emoji appear when specific hashtags -- #PopeinUS, #PopeinDC, #PopeinNYC and #PopeinPhilly, respectively -- are used in tweets.

Twitter also introduced a curated list of accounts to follow to keep tabs on the pope's six-day U.S. trip. He arrives in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday before heading to New York and Philadelphia. The emoji will work up until Sunday, the last day of the pope's visit.

Appropriately for a pope that tweets, Francis also has his own dedicated emoji and animated GIF keyboard app. That app, called Popemoji, was commissioned by the Catholic organization Aleteia, as part of a broader social media push during the pope's visit.
