When Cristiano Ronaldo -- the preening, pouting, pretty boy of a soccer star who once erected a monument to his own, um, junk -- was reported to be starring in a documentary film about his own life (all 30 years of it), the news was met with eye-rolls by many soccer fans.
Now the film's first trailer is out, and it appears many of us may have to approach this flick with a more open mind.

Sure, Ronaldo comes off as arrogant to many, as off-putting a persona as his soccer skills are alluring. And sure, this two-minute look is packaged to sell the film, called simply Ronaldo, to audiences worldwide.
But dang.
From the footage of Cristiano as a child, to a mother tearfully remembering some hard promises, to Ronaldo's own candid memories, the trailer released Monday does make a compelling case.
It looks like we actually have a candid, humanizing portrait of one of the biggest stars in sports today -- not simply a fluff piece met to further aggrandize a personal mega-brand.
Shot over 14 months of Ronaldo's current life with Real Madrid, and pulling a curtain back on his past via interviews and old footage, Ronaldo is directed by Anthony Wonke, a veteran documentary producer.
Are we saying it will actually be worth your hard-earned money on opening day? Not at all. Are we saying Monday's trailer piqued our interest in a most unexpected way? You bet.
Ronaldo hits theaters worldwide Nov. 9 -- a day that suddenly seems much more interesting than originally assumed.
