The "future" is now in Mount Isa, Australia.

A police unit there hopped on their definitely real hoverboards on Wednesday to investigate how a car crashed into a power pole outside a local theater.

The 17-year-old driver, police said, had been speeding at 88 miles per hour and was "in possession of a license which expired over 30 years ago." He got out of the car and asked for a Pepsi, according to Mount Isa Cinema owner Jodi Saunders. He also asked when they would play Jaws 19.

If more than a few things in this story sound odd, that's because today is Back to the Future Day, and Mount Isa police decided to have some fun with the occasion.

Oct. 21, 2015 is the day Doc Brown, Jennifer and Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) travel to in the 1989 movie Back to the Future II, the second in the three-part series.

But to get to the future, they had to hop into Brown's DeLorean time machine and drive off at 88 miles per hour.

In the movie (which is set 30 years ago, in 1985), McFly looks up at a theater playing Jaws 19. He also really likes Pepsi.

The movie is set in the fictional town of Hill Valley, California. That's pretty far from Mount Isa, but just about everyone on the police department's Facebook page is in on the joke. The department's fake press release has received nearly 50,000 Likes and been shared more than 13,000 times.
