For a self-proclaimed geek, Natalie Dormer sure is in an enviable position. The actress has appeared in Game of Thrones, Elementary, and the upcoming Mockingjay Part 2, boasting an impressive resume of non-stereotypical roles.

"I would do any role if I thought the script was fantastic," Dormer told Radio Times. "It has to be real human beings, contradictory, flawed, complex multidimensional characters. It can’t just be concept. You know, female James Bond –- CONCEPT. It has to have quality in the writing of real human psychology."

On Elementary, Dormer played a female Moriarty; given the right script, she says she would be open to playing Doctor Who as well.

"You have to be given the roles," she said of her turn as Moriarty. "And it was Rob Doherty as the creator of the show that gave me that role. You need the writers and the producers and the money men not to be scared."

Dormer recognizes that before major casting decisions like these can be made, Hollywood has to feel comfortable about the bankability and appeal of female stars. She said that any of the Hunger Games characters could have been written as men -- but Katniss's success points to shifting tides.

"I’m an optimist," Dormer said. "I genuinely believe the tide is turning and it all starts with the writing. We need more scripts that do these things, that give the equality in the writing to the characters, because what we’re looking for ultimately is gender irrelevance...When we get to gender irrelevance, when a character is not defined by their gender, that’s when we’ll know we’re there."
