True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is staying on Team HBO, but the network has stopped short of signing up for another season of the anthology show.

HBO announced Tuesday it has renewed its overall deal with Pizzolatto that will keep him in business with the network until 2018. Not included in the announcement, however, is an official order for Season 3.

As part of an overall deal, a creator presents new projects exclusively to the network with which the deal is under. According to HBO "a number" of new projects from Pizzolatto are "being considered," as well as future incarnations of his hit drama series.

This hesitation should not come as a surprise.

Following an award-winning and critically-acclaimed first season starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, True Detective Season 2 was a much different story.

The season -- which starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kinney -- suffered a well-chronicled sophomore slump creatively.

In the ratings, meanwhile, it averaged 11 million viewers during the season, including delayed viewing, coming up about a million short of the first season's average.

"I am thrilled to continue our relationship with Nic, as he is one of the most exceptionally talented writers and producers working today,” said HBO president Michael Lombardo. “I look forward to seeing where his unique creative vision will take us next.”
