Since the iPhone's Live Photos were introduced in the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, they pretty much existed only in the Apple realm, available to those running iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan.
Tumblr is one of the first and latest apps to change that. The social platform released an iOS update on Thursday that supports Live Photos in addition to some other new features.

Now, when you're scrolling through your Dashboard, you'll recognize Live Photos by the same circular icon that appears on a Live Photo in your iPhone's camera roll. If you're on an iPhone 6S, you can activate the Live Photo by using 3D Touch -- apply more pressure on the screen. Older iPhone users can still view them by pressing and holding on the photo.
Messaging rolls out
Also starting Thursday, messaging is available to everyone. On your Dashboard, click the face bubble on the bottom of the screen. Click the Messages tab, then the speech bubble with the plus sign in the top right corner. You can search any other Tumblr blog, and send them a message.
Another new feature is the ability to send a post to someone in a message. Click the paper airplane icon that appears next to the reblog button on a post, and you can search someone's Tumblr to message it to them.
The update also includes some early 3D Touch capabilities. For example, you can Force Touch a blog's avatar on your Dashboard to take a peek at their Tumblr. Press the screen harder to view the Tumblr blog in full.
