In late November, airlines began banning hoverboards over safety concerns. Now some colleges are following suit.

The George Washington University announced Tuesday that effective Jan. 1, 2016, hoverboards will be banned from its campus. Citing several consumer agencies that are investigating the self-balancing scooters for fire risks, the university said it is moving to ban the gizmos in order to ensure campus safety.

"If you own one, please make sure the device is not brought onto campus when returning from winter break," GWU campus security requested in its update.

The D.C. school's announcement comes a week after a private college in Rhode Island also banned hoverboards.

This will likely put a damper on the holiday season, as hoverboards had become the hottest must-have item of the year. Moreover, it seemed a college dorm hallway was the last bastion for the fire-prone machines, which are illegal to operate on the street or sidewalk.
