Snapchat may soon be overhauling some of its fundamental features.

New screenshots unearthed by some developers show a major redesign of Snapchat's "chat" screen, where users exchange text messages and live video. The new images suggest the company may be adding stickers as well as new way to connect with people with either voice or video calls.

The new features, first described on a forum for Android developers, were apparently found when developers from Snapprefs, a project that develops Snapchat features for third-party software, were poking around in the code of Snapchat's Android app. They were later able to get the new features to appear long enough to test them out and take a few screenshots.

First, the images show a redesigned look for Snapchat's "chat" screen, where users exchange text messages and live video. The new look shows a more intuitive way to share images from you camera roll -- chatting is the only section of the app where you can share images not taken from within Snapchat's app -- as well as the ability to initiate an audio or video call.

Additionally, the smiley-face icon has apparently replaced the square yellow icon, which is the live video icon within Snapchat in the current version of the app.

The screenshots also show an all-new stickers feature that allows users to exchange stickers similar to those in Facebook Messenger, Line and other chat apps.

Notably, the new audio and video calling features show much more advanced calling features than those currently available in Snapchat. Users can choose to share only audio, for example, and call recipients can choose whether or not to join the call or listen to the audio.

A Snapchat spokesperson declined to comment on the images.

While the images certainly seem to suggest Snapchat is experimenting with a new design, it doesn't necessarily mean these are features that will roll out to the public any time soon. It's also possible that the company will add these features, but with a design that looks very different from these images.

Still, that Snapchat is even experimenting with stickers and new ways to share live video and audio is definitely intriguing. The company first added messaging and live video to its app in 2014, though the feature isn't as intuitive as other apps. Right now, you can only activate live video when both users have the chat screen open simultaneously and there is no "answer" button when someone initiates live video.
