SAN FRANCISCO -- Microsoft has, in recent years, done a fairly good job of moving its Windows 10 and Xbox gaming platforms closer together, but mostly in favor of the console and console games.

That may be changing with the next big Windows update -- the Windows Anniversary Update -- which Microsoft announced this week at its annual Build Conference.

The company says its renewing its commitment to PC gaming. With Windows 10, you could stream Xbox One games to the PC. Now Microsoft wants to bring native versions of games like The Witcher 3 and Age of Empires to Windows 10.

This also adds Xbox and Windows support to titles you may also own from services like Steam, including cross-platform chat with Xbox users.

Microsoft is also embracing a more PC-friendly, hacker ethos and finally delivering on a promise it made almost three years ago: Letting gamers turn their Xbox One's into developer's kit units.

That's right, any Xbox One, even those you bought at the local Best Buy can be turned into a console that can play preview games and builds with just a few clicks.
