Snow in Jerusalem

A cold day in the Holy Land

by Alex Q. Arbuckle(opens in a new tab)

The ancient city of Jerusalem is home to holy sites of great significance to numerous religions. With an elevation of just under 2,500 feet, it is also subject to diverse weather conditions, with hot and dry summers, mild winters and even the occasional snow flurry.

These photos capture a particularly heavy snowfall during the winter of 1921, when Jerusalem was the British-administered capital of the recently created Mandatory Palestine.
