There's a really good reason why stars are wearing blue ribbons at the Oscars

Hint: It has to do with everyone's favorite non-profit organization.

There is no way the 89th annual Academy Awards was not going to get political.

Some actors and actresses kicked things off before the show even began on Sunday night by wearing blue ribbons attached to tuxes and gowns while they strode upon the red carpet on their way into the event.

The blue ribbons donned by those at the Oscars are meant to show support for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the national non-profit legal organization defending individual liberties and rights.

Actress Ruth Negga, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Karlie Kloss and Casey Affleck are among those rocking the ribbons on the carpet and standing in solidarity with the organization.

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was also spotted proudly wearing the ribbon on the red carpet.

UPDATE: Feb. 26, 2017, 7:31 p.m. EST The blue ribbon is definitely increasing awareness. "ACLU" has seen an incredible spike on Google, according to Google Trends.
