Poor weather and an unusually warm winter may have caused this year's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to take a few unexpected turns, but the same excitement still energized Alaska for the past week.

The Iditarod is the most popular sporting event in Alaska and takes mushers and their 16 sled dogs on a 1,000-mile journey across the state from Fairbanks to Nome.

This year's winner was Dallas Seavey, 27, who also won the race in 2012 and 2014. He finished the race in just eight days, competing against more than 60 other mushers, including his own father.
