SYDNEY -- Someone likes their guacamole a little too much.

A thief (or thieves) in South Australia has stolen thousands of avocados from a property near Barmera. We can only assume that there is a wild Mexican fiesta going down somewhere in the south.

More than 20 trees had their fruit stripped, with the thief or thieves making off with approximately 1,500 kilograms of avocados, according to police.

With avocados selling for $3 to $4 a piece in Australia, the value of the heist is estimated at $11,000.

Operations Inspector Mark Gould from the Murray Mallee Local Service Area told ABC Local Radio the crime happened between Sunday, Aug. 24 and Thursday, Sept. 4.

"The owner of the property checked them on the Sunday, then 11 days later went to check them to see if they were ripe for picking and they were gone," Gould said.

Police had hoped to use security cameras to help in the investigation but it was not possible due to the location of the cameras.

“There was CCTV within the grove of avocados, but unfortunately they weren’t in that location where the fruit was stolen from, so the CCTV isn't going to show us too much," Gould said.

It is believed due to the nature of the theft and the amount of time, more than one person is involved.
