Barnes & Noble is offering a $30 discount on its latest a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook to some customers who trade in their old Nooks.

Through Jan. 17 of next year, the retailer will accept used models of the Nook 1st Edition, Nook Color and Nook Tablet for store credit. If the devices work, Barnes & Noble will take them. There is not a cash trade-in option, however. Barnes & Noble club members will get an additional 10% off.

There are two models of the Samsung Nook tablet available after a trade-in. The cheaper model has a 7-inch LCD display and retails for $179.99. The bigger 10.1-inch HD model goes for $319.99. Other than the displays, the devices are fairly similar in terms of specs, though the larger tablet has more storage space.

The company has struggled in the tablet and e-reader business. In the face of fierce competition from the likes of Apple's iPads and Amazon's Kindles, Nook's market share and revenues are ever-shrinking. In 2013, the company ditched its CEO because things were so bad.

Earlier this year, a decision was made to spin off the Nook leg of Barnes & Noble into its own company. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nooks are pretty straightforward as far as what tablets can do, too.

Still, the Android tablets offer an alternative -- with a discounted price tag -- to some of Barnes & Noble's pricier competitors. (The new iPad Air 2 starts at $499 while the new iPad mini begins at $399.)
