Another chemical plant in China explodes, 6 executives arrested

SINGAPORE -- A chemical plant exploded late Monday night in Lijin, Shandong, killing one person, three weeks after an explosion in a Tianjin industrial zone killed 158 people.

The blast occurred at 11:22 p.m local time. and the fire was put out about five hours later, said local news reports (link in Chinese).

Six executives of the company that runs the factory, Shandong Binyuan Chemical Co. Ltd., have been detained by the police. According to the firm's website, the company produces 20,000 tonnes of adhesive materials annually.

Lijin is located 310 km (193 miles) away from Tianjin. China has arrested 23 people under criminal charges tied to the Tianjin blasts, state media said. Among the arrested are the chairman, vice-chairman and three deputy managers of the warehouse that exploded.
