After police arrested Dylann Roof for the murder of nine black parishioners at a church in Charleston, officers drove to Burger King and bought him a burger when he complained he was hungry.
Before his arrest on Thursday, Roof had made a pit stop at a gas station near Charlotte, North Carolina. He used the station's ATM to take out some cash, then filled up his black Hyundai--the one with Confederate flag plates--and bought water and a bag of Dorritos, according to local reports.
Roof had been on the run since Wednesday night. He has reportedly confessed to police that he committed the mass-murder at the church.
Police described Roof as a quiet guy who gave them no trouble during the arrest, according to The Charlotte Observer. Images of white officers escorting Roof peacefully after his arrest rankled many who were reminded of other, more violent, encounters between police and black suspects like the video of a white officer named Michael Slager who shot a black man named Walter Scott in the back just this April.
Police escorted Roof back to South Carolina after his arrest. He is now in a North Charleston prison, just a few miles up the road from Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where the shooting took place.
