Thomas Menino, a former mayor of Boston, died Thursday, but his political influence lives on -- at least until ballots are counted for the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

Menino filled out an absentee ballot before his death, according to The Boston Globe, though his spokesperson is not revealing who or what he voted for. The elections are set to take place on Nov. 4.

Menino first became acting mayor of Boston in 1993, and that led to five consecutive terms in office. He left his post earlier in 2014 after being in office for around 20 years, making him the longest-serving mayor in Boston's history.

The former mayor was hospitalized about two weeks ago, after which he reportedly decided to forego further treatment on his inoperable cancer.

In a statement on Thursday following Menino's death, U.S. President Barack Obama said the former mayor embodied the city he represented for two decades, calling him "bold, big-hearted and Boston strong."
