EMI and RIAA To Call It Quits? Me Thinks No.

According to a story circulating about EMI today, the recording giant has supposedly given some nasty lip to the RIAA, and there are some strong suspicions that it is now looking to pull funding from the industry association. (And the IFPI, too.)

But would such a departure be in EMI’s best interest? I’m thinking…no.

And if the others renege on the pact they had signed way back when, as Ars Technica’s Nate Anderson posits to be a possibility, then they will each wield less power amidst their foes. Why would they want that?

Sure, if the RIAA were nevermore, that’d be pretty darn great. It’s nothing but an aged hindrance to change - at a point in time when every Tom, Dick, and Sally is yammering on about how everyone under the sun wants frickin’ change!

But if you look at what pursuits embody the mantra set by the RIAA, they don’t so much as what change as control. And how could they control anything if they go their separate ways? They couldn’t.
