Facebook continues its drive to own all your friendships: you can now share content and send mails from Facebook to any email address, not just Facebook users. When you do so, these email addresses get added to your "friend selector" for easy mailing. in a way, you're turning non-Facebook friends into "half friends" that Facebook can convert to real users later. If that friend is already on Facebook, they'll get a copy in their Facebook inbox.
It's a move to supplant your webmail account, too. Facebook writes: As we continue to make Facebook more useful for everyone, these changes mean that there's no need to switch between Facebook and email for your daily communication needs. In plain english: we want to own the webmail space (they even add that one of their engineers will never use regular email again, thanks to the feature).
