FERGUSON, Missouri -- On one side of the street, a group of mostly white protesters held "I Love Ferguson" signs. On the other side stood the activists, who called for an overhaul of the local police force as they tore an American flag to shreds before throwing its tattered remains into the dirt. Some met in the middle, going toe-to-toe with each other, screaming as police tried to calm tensions.

A shooting at the police department the the early hours of Thursday reignited tensions in Ferguson, which has been boiling since August, when Darren Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown. On Sunday afternoon, dozens of people in Ferguson rallied in defense of their police department, which was most recently the center of a Justice Department report that revealed a pattern of racial bias within the department.

Despite high-profile resignations of Ferguson officials, a simmering dispute still divides this middle-America community.
