All was well in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we patiently awaited the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy -- until director James Gunn revealed that even the most hardcore Marvel fans had missed something that's hiding in the first movie.

During a little Q&A session on his Facebook page, Gunn unleashed fan fervor when he said that there's a huge Easter egg -- a hidden message or inside joke, typical in the Marvel universe -- that has flown under the radar thus far.
The news, of course, came as a shock to fans who thought they'd already poured over every single detail of the movie.
So as any good fan would do, some kicked off another hunt and began going through Guardians frame by frame. They're going to Gunn with their findings and theories.
Could it be this brief Spider-Man appearance?
Or could it be the identity of a "purple guy" who didn't seem to die when a planet was destroyed?
While Gunn didn't confirm either of these findings, he did tell us what the Easter egg wasn't:
Of course, it's also possible that the correct egg has already been discovered out there in the galaxy that is the Internet, but hasn't yet been brought to Gunn's attention.
Sadly, the director probably won't have time to debunk or confirm any more theories, as he'll likely be busy starting pre-production work on Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2.
But either way, this supposedly undiscovered egg is as good an excuse as any for us all to revisit the movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 is slated for a May 5th, 2017 release date, giving us plenty of time to study up.
