Iceland is simultaneously one of the most beautiful and desolate landscapes in the world.

The Icelandic scenery in wintertime is typically blanketed with white ice and snow. But for a brief period, the Holuhraun volcano erupts into a fiery mass of hot lava the size Manhattan, splitting the ground. But those wishing to see the inside the volcano will have to act soon because scientists and the Icelandic Met Office expect the volcano to cease eruption in March of 2015.

The volcano is best viewed by air, but if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, there are land tours available as well.

In contrast, temporary ice caves form along the edge of glaciers every winter, which can be accessed with assistance from professional local guides, according to Guide to Iceland. This year, the Vatnajökull glacier offers the best caves for visiting.

So for just a short period of time, visitors to Iceland can visit two of the most beautiful location and opposite natural wonders on Earth.
