Jane the Virgin is a fairy tale in every way. There’s the actual story of young, waiting-til-marriage Jane Gloriana Villanueva, who is accidentally artificially inseminated but surrounded by loving family, friends and practically perfect potential suitors.

And then there’s the magical fact that this absurd premise survived its first season by making audiences fall in love with Gina Rodriguez’s Jane and all the drama in her life.

Jane the Virgin is one of the smartest, most emotionally charged shows on television. As Season 2 returns to the CW on Monday, there’s a lot to keep in mind about where everyone left off.

Like a true telanovela, Season 1 was relentlessly eventful, from gruesome murders (icicles! corkscrews!) to shady pasts (Michael stole cars! Rafael stole women's hearts!) to tearful moments with the Villanueva family (when people sit on the porch, it's tissue time). Season 2 will air Mondays on the CW -- and, with any luck, continue the miracle of Jane's magic.
