Remember when a terrorism analyst on Fox News said Birmingham in the UK was a "no-go zone" where non-Muslims don't dare venture? And then when British Prime Minister David Cameron called him a "complete idiot"?

Fox News has since apologised four times for the debacle amid derision on both sides of the Atlantic, and now Jon Stewart has weighed in.

"It's the rare foxus contritus", he quipped, before asking what they could have done to cause such contrition. "How bad does bullshit have to smell before the odour is detected by people who live on a mountain made out of that substance?"

Stewart then replayed the gaffe, in which Steven Emerson declares: "There are actually cities like Birmingham, that are totally Muslim where non-Muslims simply don't go into." Stewart followed the soundbite up with: "That must be really inconvenient for the 78% of Birmingham residents who are not Muslim." He then went on to mock David Cameron for saying he nearly choked on his porridge when he heard the news.

The original sparked a hashtag, #FoxNewsFacts, which ridiculed Emerson's remarks.
