After months of simply blocking widgets in a seemingly ad hoc manner, MySpace has finally spoken up on the issue - at least, it has outlined the requirements that will prevent MySpace music players from being blocked.
MySpace says that widget developers should register with Audible Magic, which provides audio fingerprinting for MySpace, GoFish, Break.com, MSN Soapbox (currently being implemented) and YouTube (coming soon).
MySpace says it's currently blocking outgoing links from Sonific, Amie Street, MOG and Hoooka - Imeem was blocked temporarily, while Mashable can add ProjectPlaylist and VideoCodeZone to that list. Other music-focused widget providers include Finetune and ProjectOpus. Partnering with Audible Magic might not be straightforward however, as the database currently contains only 6 million songs. It's also worth mentioning Imeem again: they went legitimate by partnering with Snocap, which provides copyright checks in addition to its main business of providing its own embeddable players. MySpace and Snocap are partners: will MySpace also accept the use of Snocap's filtering technology by external sites?
At the very least, this is a sign that MySpace does occasionally liaise with widget makers, and perhaps the communication channels will now open up. We can only hope.
